Web App Development

Typed end to end, tested where it matters.

Web application development in React and TypeScript, with an architecture decided per surface and written down, performance budgets enforced in CI, and tests on the paths that lose money when they break. The framework is a choice we justify, not a habit.

WHY WEB BUILDS STALL

The demo was fast.
Production was not.

A greenfield app is quick for six weeks and then slows down, usually for the same four reasons. None of them are framework problems, which is why changing framework rarely helps.

THE CAUSE
HOW IT SHOWS UP
HOW WE AVOID IT
Rendering decided by default

Everything client-rendered because the starter template was, so the first paint is slow on the pages that matter for search and conversion.

Rendering chosen per surface with a written reason — static, server, streamed or client — based on what that page has to do.

Types stop at the API boundary

The client believes a shape the server no longer returns, and the failure surfaces as an undefined in production.

One schema generating both sides, so a backend change breaks the build rather than the user.

Performance measured once

A good Lighthouse score at launch, then a steady decline nobody notices until a customer complains.

Budgets in CI. A pull request that regresses bundle size or interaction latency fails, the same as a failing test.

Tests everywhere or nowhere

Either no tests, or a suite so slow and brittle that people rerun it hoping for green.

Tests concentrated on the money paths, fast enough that nobody is tempted to skip them.

WHAT WE BUILD

What a web build ships with

The application is the visible part. These are what make the second year of it cheaper than the first.

Architecture decision records

Rendering strategy, state management, data fetching and boundaries — written down with the options rejected, so nobody relitigates them in six months.

Typed contracts end to end

One schema source generating client types, server validation and database access, so drift becomes a compile error instead of an incident.

Deployable from day one

A skeleton in production in week one, behind a flag. The pipeline is proven when it is cheap to fix rather than the week before launch.

Performance budgets in CI

Bundle size, Core Web Vitals and interaction latency measured on every pull request, with the build failing on regression.

Accessibility built in

Semantic structure, focus management and keyboard paths handled as the components are written, verified to WCAG 2.2 AA rather than audited later.

Observability before launch

Error tracking, tracing and the dashboards your on-call rotation will actually use, wired up before the first real user arrives.

WHAT WE BUILD

Web applications where the details decide it

The common thread: real users, real data volumes, and a genuine cost when the interface is slow or wrong.

Customer-facing platforms

Portals and self-service applications where speed, accessibility and reliability are all commercially visible.

Internal operational tools

The screens a team lives in all day, where density and keyboard speed matter more than visual novelty.

Marketplaces and multi-sided apps

Where two or three user types share surfaces and the permission model is most of the complexity.

Dashboards and reporting surfaces

Data-heavy interfaces that have to stay responsive as accounts grow past the demo dataset.

Migrations off legacy front ends

Replacing an ageing interface incrementally, without a flag-day rewrite and without retraining every user.

Product surfaces for AI features

Streaming output, editable results and cost controls, built as product rather than as a prompt box.

AI-ASSISTED DELIVERY

The same build, roughly a third fewer hours.

Somewhere between a quarter and a third of a web build is mechanical: component skeletons, type definitions, test fixtures, repetitive refactors, API client code. Our engineers generate that layer and spend the recovered time on architecture, edge cases and performance work — the parts that actually decide whether the product holds up. You pay for fewer hours, and the hours you do pay for go on judgement.

SCAFFOLDING

Days back per sprint

Components, types, fixtures and API clients generated from the schema rather than typed by hand. The saving compounds across every feature, and it is the least interesting code in the build.

TEST DEPTH

Coverage without the cost

Edge cases enumerated from type signatures and component states, so the null, the empty array and the four-thousand-row list get tested. Previously this was the coverage teams skipped when the sprint got tight.

MIGRATIONS

A week down to an afternoon

Framework upgrades and codemods applied uniformly across hundreds of files. Work that used to be deferred for quarters because nobody could justify the hours becomes routine maintenance.

HOW THE SPEED STAYS SAFE

Faster, at the same standard.

The efficiency is real because the review is not skipped. Every line goes through the same pipeline, the same tests and the same named owner, which is what stops speed turning into a maintenance bill later.

See our AI practice
WHAT WE DO NOT CUT
Every pull request has a human author

An engineer owns the change, explains it in review and is accountable in production. Provenance never changes the standard applied.

Same CI gates, no exemptions

Generated code passes the same types, tests, accessibility checks and performance budgets. Nothing merges on a lighter path.

The saving shows up in the estimate

We price the build with this assumed rather than billing the old way and keeping the difference. It is visible in the number you approve.

Your policy is respected

Where your organisation restricts AI assistance or code cannot leave your estate, we work within that and price accordingly. We ask at kickoff.

HOW WE WORK

Deploy in week one,
then add features

The riskiest part of a build is the pipeline, not the features. So an empty application goes to production first, and everything after that is additive rather than a leap of faith at the end.

01
Week 1
Decide and deploy
OUTPUTSkeleton in production & ADRs

Rendering strategy, boundaries and data approach agreed and written down, then an empty application deployed through the real pipeline behind a flag.

Decisions recorded with rejected options
Real pipeline proven in week one
Environments reproducible from clean
02
Week 1-2
Wire the contracts
OUTPUTTyped schema across the stack

One schema source generating client types, server validation and database access. Get this right and a whole category of production bug simply cannot happen.

Single source of truth for shapes
Validation at the boundary
Breaking changes fail the build
03
Week 2 onward
Build in two-week slices
OUTPUTWorking software on staging

Each slice ends with something on staging you can open and use. Not a percentage or a status update — a build, with tests on the paths that matter.

Demoable software every two weeks
Tests written with the feature
Priorities re-cut between slices
04
Continuous
Enforce the budgets
OUTPUTCI gates on every PR

Bundle size, Core Web Vitals, accessibility checks and test coverage on the critical paths, all blocking. Quality maintained by the pipeline rather than by remembering.

Performance regressions fail the build
Accessibility checked automatically
Coverage enforced where it matters
05
Before launch
Harden and hand over
OUTPUTRunbook & observability

Load testing, error paths, monitoring and dashboards, then a walkthrough for whoever will be on call. This is the phase most projects delete when late.

Load and failure paths exercised
Dashboards your on-call will use
Rollback rehearsed on staging
WHEN NOT TO BUILD

When we would
not start here

Building the wrong thing well is the most expensive outcome available. These four are worth resolving before any engineering starts.

A rewrite has been decided but not justified

Most legacy pain is a handful of specific problems. Replacing everything to fix three of them rarely survives contact with the timeline.

Nobody has watched a user attempt this

Engineering a flow nobody has validated means building the wrong thing efficiently. Two weeks of research is cheaper than a quarter of build.

Start with discovery.
A no-code tool would genuinely do it

For internal CRUD at low volume, an off-the-shelf tool ships faster and costs less to run. We will say so.

Buy rather than build.
There is no owner after launch

An application with no maintainer becomes a liability at the first dependency vulnerability. That role has to exist before build.

Name the owner, then start.

WHAT WE REPORT ON

What lands in the sprint review

Story points measure activity. These measure whether the software is getting better or quietly getting worse.

Core Web Vitals at p75

Real-user LCP, INP and CLS on the pages that matter commercially, tracked per release rather than sampled once.

Deploy frequency and lead time

How often you can ship and how long a change takes to reach production. Both are proxies for how safe the pipeline feels.

Change failure rate

Share of deploys needing a fix or rollback. Rising numbers mean the tests are not covering what they should.

Test coverage on critical paths

Not overall coverage, which is easy to game, but coverage of the flows that cost money when they break.

Bundle size per route

Tracked per pull request. Performance decays gradually, so it has to be measured continuously to be held.

Accessibility violations

Automated checks in CI plus a manual pass per release, reported rather than accumulated silently.

Industry Expertise Across 35+ Sectors

From retail apps and banking dashboards to a defence group rebrand, we bring proven domain knowledge to every product we design and build.

FAQ

Questions about web builds

Engineering Quality & performance Commercials

Do you always use React and Next.js?

Most often, because the ecosystem and hiring pool are strong. But rendering strategy is decided per surface and we will recommend something else where it fits better. The decision gets written down either way.

Why deploy an empty application in week one?

Because the pipeline is the riskiest part of any build and the cheapest time to fix it is when there is nothing in it. Teams that leave deployment until the end discover their hardest problems under deadline.

How do you decide what to test?

By what costs money when it breaks. Checkout, auth, permissions and data writes get end-to-end coverage. A settings toggle does not. A slow suite that people skip protects nothing.

What does typed end to end actually mean?

One schema source generating client types, server validation and database access. A backend change that breaks the client fails the build rather than reaching a user.

Can you work in our existing codebase?

Yes, and it is common. We adopt your conventions, read what exists before proposing changes, and work through your review process rather than beside it.
