Mobile App Development

Native where it matters, shared where it pays.

iOS and Android app development with offline state that survives a tunnel, notifications that respect the operating system, and store submission handled by us. Cross-platform is a decision we justify per project rather than a default we apply to every one.

WHERE MOBILE BUILDS FAIL

It worked on the simulator
and on good wifi.

Mobile punishes assumptions that a web build tolerates. The device is old, the connection drops, the operating system kills the process, and a user updates six months late. Four things separate an app that survives from one that gets uninstalled.

THE ASSUMPTION
WHAT IT PRODUCES
WHAT WE DO
The network is available

A spinner that never resolves and a form that loses everything the user typed when the request fails.

Local-first writes with a queue and a visible sync state, so losing signal is an inconvenience rather than lost work.

The process stays alive

The app is backgrounded during a call, the OS reclaims memory, and the user returns to a blank screen at step one.

State persisted and restored on every screen, tested by deliberately killing the process mid-flow.

Everyone updates

A breaking API change ships and the users on last quarter’s build see errors for weeks until they happen to update.

Versioned APIs with a supported window, plus a forced-update path for genuinely breaking changes.

One codebase means one design

A shared layout applied to both stores, so navigation and gestures feel wrong on at least one platform.

Shared logic, platform-appropriate navigation and gestures. Users notice, even when they cannot articulate it.

WHAT WE BUILD

What a mobile build ships with

Getting to the store is the halfway point. These are what decide whether the app is still installed in month three.

Platform decision, justified

Native or cross-platform argued from your requirements — device APIs, team skills, release cadence — and written down rather than assumed.

Offline and sync layer

Local database, write queue, conflict resolution and sync indicators. The hardest part of most mobile builds and the most often deferred.

Release pipeline

Automated builds, signing, TestFlight and Play tracks, and staged rollout with the ability to halt a release mid-flight.

Push and deep linking

Notification infrastructure, permission timing, and deep links that resolve correctly from a cold start rather than dumping the user on the home screen.

Crash and performance monitoring

Symbolicated crash reporting, startup time and frame-rate tracking, wired up before launch and triaged by us during the support window.

Store submission

Metadata, privacy declarations, review responses and the rejection appeals. We handle submission rather than handing you a binary.

WHAT WE BUILD

Apps where the device is the point

If none of these apply, a good mobile web experience usually wins. We will say so before you commit to two platforms.

Field and frontline tools

Engineers, drivers and inspectors working offline, one-handed, on hardware that has been dropped more than once.

Consumer apps with retention targets

Where week-one retention decides the business case and startup time is a conversion metric.

Companion apps

A focused mobile surface for a web product — the three things people need on the move, not every feature ported.

Transactional and payment apps

Biometric auth, secure storage and interrupted flows that must never cost a user their progress or their money.

Regulated and clinical apps

Consent, audit trails, data residency and stricter store review, all designed in rather than added under pressure.

Rebuilds after poor reviews

An app with one-star reviews about crashes and confusion. Usually architecture rather than pixels.

AI-ASSISTED DELIVERY

Two platforms,without twice the hours.

Mobile work is full of duplicated effort: the same model layer twice, the same tests twice, SDK deprecations across hundreds of files, crash logs nobody has time to read properly. That is where AI earns its place on a mobile budget — it collapses the mechanical duplication and the triage backlog, so the engineering hours go on offline behaviour and device performance instead.

PARALLEL PLATFORMS

The second platform costs less

Model layers, serialisation, tests and API clients ported between iOS and Android with the structure generated and the platform specifics written by hand. The duplication stops being billable thinking time.

CRASH TRIAGE

An hour instead of a week

Thousands of stack traces clustered by root cause rather than message, so a release regression is found the day it ships. Faster triage means smaller support windows and fewer emergency releases.

SDK MAINTENANCE

Upgrades that stop slipping

OS and SDK deprecation sweeps applied consistently across the codebase. The maintenance that usually gets deferred until it becomes a forced migration becomes a routine sprint task.

HOW THE SPEED STAYS SAFE

Speed on the mechanical work, not on verification.

Every release still runs on physical devices, including deliberately old hardware, on a throttled connection, with the process killed mid-flow. The hours saved on boilerplate go straight into that testing rather than out of the budget entirely.

See our AI practice
WHAT WE DO NOT CUT
Every release is tested on real hardware

Both platforms, old and new devices. Simulator-only verification is not verification, and no amount of generated test coverage substitutes for it.

Generated code passes the same pipeline

Same review, same tests, same accountability. There is no lighter standard for anything that reaches a user.

Crash clusters are reproduced before fixing

Automated grouping is a hypothesis. An engineer reproduces the crash on a device before writing the fix.

The saving is in the quote

Cross-platform efficiency is priced in rather than pocketed. You see it in the estimate for the second platform.

HOW WE WORK

Ship to a store
in week three

Store review, signing and distribution are the parts most likely to surprise a team, so an almost-empty build goes through the whole pipeline early. Everything after that is features rather than firsts.

01
Week 1
Decide the platform strategy
OUTPUTPlatform decision record

Native or cross-platform, argued from device APIs, offline requirements, your team’s skills and release cadence. Written down with the rejected options, because this decision is expensive to reverse.

Device capabilities inventoried
Team skills and hiring considered
Decision recorded, not assumed
02
Week 2-3
Prove the pipeline
OUTPUTBuild in TestFlight and Play

A near-empty app signed, built automatically and distributed to internal testers on both platforms. Certificates and review are where timelines slip, so we hit them first.

Automated signing and builds
Internal distribution working
Store accounts and metadata set up
03
Week 3-10
Build offline-first
OUTPUTCore flows with sync working

Local database, write queue and conflict handling built with the first feature rather than added later. Retrofitting offline into an online-only app is close to a rewrite.

Local-first data layer from the start
Sync state visible to the user
Tested with the network disabled
04
Week 10-13
Harden on real devices
OUTPUTDevice matrix test results

Old hardware, low memory, poor connection, interrupted processes and permission denials. This phase is why the app survives its first month rather than its first demo.

Physical device matrix, both platforms
Process death and restoration tested
Startup time and frame rate measured
05
Week 13-16
Submit and support
OUTPUTApproved release & runbook

Privacy declarations, store metadata, submission and any review responses handled by us, then staged rollout with crash triage through the first weeks live.

Submission and appeals handled
Staged rollout with halt capability
Crash triage during the support window
WHEN NOT TO BUILD AN APP

When we would
talk you out of two platforms

An app is a permanent commitment: two release cycles, store review, certificate renewals and support forever. Where a browser would do, that overhead buys nothing.

No device capability is needed

Without camera, location, offline, biometrics or push, the app is a slower-to-release wrapper around a website.

Responsive web, built properly.
The task is occasional

Nobody keeps an icon for something they do quarterly. Installation is a real cost to the user and it has to be earned.

Mobile web is the honest answer.
You cannot support both platforms

Two stores means two release cycles and two support surfaces indefinitely. One platform done well beats two done thinly.

Pick one platform deliberately.
The web product is still unresolved

Porting unresolved problems doubles their surface area. Fix it once, in one place, then port what works.

Fix the core product first.

WHAT WE REPORT ON

What lands in the release review

Downloads are a marketing number. These tell you whether the engineering is holding up in real hands.

Crash-free sessions

Per release and per device class. A regression on old hardware is invisible in an aggregate figure.

Cold start time

Measured on your slowest supported device, not the newest. Startup time is a retention metric.

Offline success rate

Share of actions taken without connectivity that sync correctly afterwards. The number that decides whether field users trust it.

Adoption of latest version

How quickly users move to a new release, which determines how long you must support old API contracts.

Store review outcome

First-submission approval rate and the reasons for rejection, tracked so the same mistake is not repeated.

Frame rate on key screens

Jank on scrolling and animation, per device class. Perceived quality lives here more than in any visual detail.

Industry Expertise Across 35+ Sectors

From retail apps and banking dashboards to a defence group rebrand, we bring proven domain knowledge to every product we design and build.

FAQ

Questions about mobile builds

Platform choice Engineering Commercials

Native or cross-platform?

It depends on device API depth, offline complexity, your team’s existing skills and release cadence. We argue it per project and write the decision down. Defaulting either way is how teams end up fighting their own stack.

Is React Native good enough for production?

For most applications, yes, and we ship it regularly. Where you need deep platform integration, heavy graphics or very tight performance control, native wins and we will say so.

Can you build one platform first?

Yes, and often you should. Choose by where your users are rather than by which is cheaper, and get one right before doubling the support surface.

What about tablets and foldables?

Scoped explicitly where they matter. Both need real layout work rather than a stretched phone screen, so we do not include them silently.

Do you work with our existing app?

Yes. The two-week technical review is designed for exactly that, and tells you whether to extend or replace before you commit budget.

TECHNICAL REVIEW

Send us your app
and your crash reports.

Forty-five minutes with a mobile engineer. We will install it on an old device, put it on a bad connection, and tell you which of your problems are architecture and which are a fortnight of fixes. No deck, no audit fee.
