Data Engineering

Pipelines with lineage you can trace.

Data engineering with warehouse modelling finance agrees with, streaming only where batch genuinely will not do, data quality tests that fail the build, and one definition per metric written down. Most data problems are contract problems wearing a plumbing costume.

WHY PIPELINES ROT

It ran green.
The numbers were wrong.

A data platform fails quietly. The job succeeds, the dashboard loads, and the figure is wrong for three weeks before anyone notices. Four causes account for most of it, and none of them are about the orchestration tool.

THE CAUSE
HOW IT SURFACES
WHAT WE PUT IN PLACE
No tests on the data itself

The pipeline ran, so it is assumed fine. Nobody checked that row counts were plausible or that a key was still unique.

Freshness, uniqueness, referential integrity and business-rule tests on every model, failing the run rather than logging a warning.

Transformation logic scattered

The same metric calculated in four places — a dbt model, a BI tool, a notebook and a spreadsheet — with four slightly different answers.

Metrics defined once in code, reviewed like any other change, and consumed everywhere from that single definition.

No lineage

A field is wrong and nobody can say which upstream job produced it or what breaks if it changes.

Column-level lineage generated automatically, so impact is a query rather than an archaeology exercise.

Streaming because it sounded better

Real-time infrastructure maintained for a dashboard nobody opens before 9am, at several times the operational cost of a batch job.

Batch by default, streaming only where a decision genuinely depends on freshness measured in seconds.

WHAT WE BUILD

What a data platform ships with

Dashboards are downstream of all of this. Get these six right and the reporting layer becomes almost boring, which is the goal.

Ingestion you can reason about

Connectors or change data capture with schema-change handling, so an upstream column rename is caught rather than silently dropping data.

Modelled warehouse layers

Raw, staging and mart layers with documented grain per table, so nobody is joining production replicas and guessing at cardinality.

Metrics defined once, in code

One definition per metric, versioned and reviewed, consumed by every dashboard and every API rather than reimplemented per tool.

Data quality tests

Assertions on freshness, volume, uniqueness and business rules, wired into the run so a failure stops the pipeline before a reader sees it.

Column-level lineage

Automatic lineage from source to dashboard, so the impact of a change is answerable in seconds and incidents are traceable.

Orchestration and alerting

Dependency-aware scheduling with retries and backfill, and alerts that page someone when a business-critical table is stale.

WHEN TEAMS CALL US

Moments the data layer stops holding

Rarely a greenfield project. Usually a platform that worked at one team’s scale and is straining at four.

Numbers get argued with

Two dashboards disagree, so every meeting starts by litigating which figure is right instead of deciding anything.

Pipelines fail silently

A job broke on Friday and nobody noticed until Wednesday, by which time three reports had been circulated.

One person understands it

The platform runs on knowledge held by a single engineer, and nobody else can safely change a model.

AI needs clean inputs

A model or agent project has stalled because the data behind it is inconsistent, undocumented or unavailable.

Warehouse cost is climbing

Compute spend grows faster than data volume, which is nearly always a modelling and query problem.

Compliance needs lineage

An auditor or regulator wants to know where a number came from, and the answer currently requires a person.

AI-ASSISTED DELIVERY

Four hundred models,documented and tested.

Data work is dominated by volume: staging models per source table, tests per column, documentation per field, migration of legacy SQL. It is the work that gets partially done, which is the same as not done when a missing test is what lets a bad number through. Generating that layer means the coverage is actually complete inside a realistic budget.

MODEL SCAFFOLDING

Staging layers from the schema

Staging models, type casting and naming standardisation generated per source table. Hand-writing the two-hundredth staging model is where consistency and attention both fail.

TEST AND DOC COVERAGE

Every column, not the important ones

Tests and descriptions generated per column from the schema and observed data, then reviewed. Previously the work that got trimmed under deadline and never came back.

SQL MIGRATION

Legacy queries, translated consistently

Stored procedures and legacy SQL translated into modelled, tested transformations across hundreds of files, uniformly rather than by attrition.

WHERE WE DRAW THE LINE

Business definitions are agreed with people, not inferred.

What counts as an active user or recognised revenue is a commercial decision, settled with finance and product in a room. Generated volume is what makes room for that conversation inside the budget.

See our AI practice
HOW IT IS CONTROLLED
Metric definitions come from a workshop

Semantics are agreed with finance, product and sales, then written in code. No definition is inferred from what a query appeared to do.

Generated tests are reviewed and tightened

Automated coverage is a floor. An engineer sets the real thresholds and confirms the assertions actually fail on bad data.

Translated SQL is verified against outputs

A migrated query is compared row by row against the original before the old one is retired. No exceptions.

The efficiency is priced in

We quote assuming this way of working, so the saving appears in your estimate rather than in our margin.

HOW WE WORK

Definitions first,
pipelines after

A pipeline built on contested definitions produces numbers people argue with. So the semantics get settled and signed before any transformation is written, which is a fortnight that saves a quarter.

OUTPUTSource map & divergence report

Every source, every pipeline, every place a metric is calculated. Shadow spreadsheets are catalogued because they document exactly what the platform fails to provide.

WHEN NOT TO BUILD

When a warehouse
is not the answer

A data platform has real running and maintenance costs. Below a certain complexity those costs exceed the benefit and we would say so.

One product, one database

For a small team with a single source, a read replica and good SQL is genuinely the right answer. A warehouse adds cost and a maintainer.

Read replica and good queries.
The events are not captured

You cannot model behaviour nobody instrumented. If the product does not emit the events, tracking comes first.

Instrument, then model.
Nobody will own the models

Transformation code without a maintainer drifts within two quarters and then nobody trusts it. The owner matters more than the tooling.

Name the owner, then start.
Streaming is being assumed

Real-time infrastructure costs several times more to run and operate. Very few decisions genuinely need second-level freshness.

Batch until a decision needs otherwise.

WHAT WE REPORT ON

What lands in the monthly review

Job success rate is necessary and nowhere near sufficient. A green pipeline can still deliver wrong numbers.

Freshness against SLA

Whether business-critical tables were ready when they were needed, per table rather than as an aggregate.

Test pass rate and coverage

Share of models with meaningful assertions, and how often they catch something. Tests that never fail are usually testing nothing.

Definition coverage

Metrics in exec reporting with a single documented definition in code. Anything uncovered is named rather than assumed consistent.

Reconciliation variance

Distance between reported revenue and the ledger. The number that decides whether finance trusts the platform.

Warehouse cost per model

Compute attributed to transformations, so an expensive model is visible before the quarterly bill.

Time to onboard a new source

Days from request to a tested, documented, modelled table. It should be days rather than a quarter.

Industry Expertise Across 35+ Sectors

From retail apps and banking dashboards to a defence group rebrand, we bring proven domain knowledge to every product we design and build.

FAQ

Questions about data engineering

Approach Quality & cost Commercials

Why agree definitions before building?

Because a pipeline built on contested definitions produces numbers people argue with rather than act on. Two weeks of workshops is cheaper than a quarter of reporting nobody trusts.

Do we need streaming?

Almost certainly less than you think. Streaming costs several times more to run and operate, and very few decisions genuinely depend on second-level freshness. We use it where a decision does.

Can you work with our existing warehouse?

Yes, and that is the normal case. We document the grain, add tests and refactor incrementally rather than proposing a rebuild.

dbt or something else?

dbt most often, because the ecosystem and hiring pool are strong. SQLMesh where versioned environments matter. The choice is recorded with the reasoning either way.

How is this different from hiring an analyst?

An analyst answers questions. This builds the layer that lets them answer questions quickly and consistently. Teams that hire first often find their analyst doing plumbing.
