n8n vs Zapier vs Make: which automation tool should you use?
Choose Zapier if a non-technical team needs to connect many apps quickly, Make if you want visual, multi-step workflows at a lower cost per step, and n8n if you have technical skills, run high volumes or need to self-host for data control. All three now support AI agents, so the bigger differences are billing model, ease of use and hosting.
How do n8n, Zapier and Make compare at a glance?
| Zapier | Make | n8n |
|---|
| Best for | Non-technical teams, quick setup | Visual multi-step workflows on a budget | Technical teams, high volume, data control |
| Billing unit | Task (each action step) | Credit (each module run) | Execution (whole workflow run) |
| Entry paid plan | Professional plan, task-based | Core plan from $9/month for 10,000 credits | Cloud plans by executions; Community Edition free to self-host |
| App library | Largest, 8,000+ apps | Large | Smaller, plus HTTP and code nodes for anything else |
| Self-hosting | No | No | Yes |
| AI agents | Zapier Agents, AI actions, Zapier MCP | AI Agents and AI modules | AI Agent node built on LangChain, plus MCP nodes |
| Learning curve | Lowest | Moderate | Highest |
Prices and plan limits change often, so confirm current figures on the Zapier, Make and n8n pricing pages before you decide.
Why does the billing model matter so much?
Headline prices hide the real difference: what each tool counts. Zapier counts a task each time an action step runs. Make counts credits, usually one per module run. n8n counts one execution for the whole workflow, however many steps it has.
For simple two-step automations the difference is small. For long workflows that run thousands of times, such as lead enrichment or order processing, per-step billing adds up quickly, and n8n’s per-execution model is usually the cheapest. Zapier also bills some AI features separately from core tasks, so check how agents and AI actions are charged.
Which tool is easiest to use?
Zapier is the easiest. Its builder walks you through a trigger and a list of actions, and most teams have a working automation within an hour. Make uses a visual canvas where modules connect like a flowchart; it takes longer to learn but makes branching, loops and error handling easier to see. n8n also uses a visual canvas, but it expects more technical comfort: working with JSON, writing small code snippets and, if self-hosting, running a server.
How do their AI agent features compare?
All three platforms now let you add AI steps and build agents that decide which action to take next.
- Zapier: Zapier Agents work across its large app library, and Zapier MCP lets AI assistants trigger Zapier actions directly.
- Make: AI Agents and AI modules sit inside visual scenarios, so you can see each decision path.
- n8n: An AI Agent node built on LangChain, with memory, vector stores, many model providers and MCP client and server nodes.
If you want an AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to use your automations, MCP support matters. Our beginner’s guide to MCP explains how it works. For product teams adding AI to their own software, see AI in SaaS products.
Phone-based agents are a growing use case too; see our guide to AI voice agents for business.

Which is best for data privacy and control?
n8n is the only one of the three you can self-host. Running it on your own servers or private cloud means workflow data stays within your infrastructure, which can help with data residency, regulated industries and internal security policies. Zapier and Make are cloud-only, though both offer enterprise plans with additional security controls. n8n is distributed under its own fair-code licence, the Sustainable Use License, so check the terms if you plan to offer it as part of a commercial product.
Which automation tool should you choose?
| If you… | Choose |
|---|
| Have no developers and need dozens of app connections fast | Zapier |
| Want visual control of branching workflows on a small budget | Make |
| Run high-volume or long workflows | n8n |
| Must keep data on your own infrastructure | n8n (self-hosted) |
| Are building AI agents that need memory and custom models | n8n, or Make for simpler agents |
| Need a tool marketing or operations can maintain alone | Zapier or Make |
Many businesses use more than one: Zapier for quick team-level automations and n8n for core, high-volume processes owned by a technical team.
What are common business automations to start with?
- Lead capture: route form submissions to your CRM, enrich them and alert sales
- Customer onboarding: create accounts, send welcome sequences and assign owners
- Reporting: pull data from several tools into a weekly summary
- Support triage: classify incoming requests with AI and route them
- Finance: sync invoices and payments between systems

What mistakes should you avoid when choosing?
- Comparing headline prices without counting steps and runs
- Choosing n8n without anyone to maintain it
- Building critical processes with no error alerts or logging
- Letting dozens of people create automations with no naming or ownership rules
- Giving AI agents write access before testing them on read-only tasks

Frequently asked questions
Is n8n free?
The self-hosted Community Edition has no licence fee, but you pay for hosting and maintenance. n8n Cloud is a paid service.
Is Make cheaper than Zapier?
Usually, for multi-step workflows. Make’s entry plan starts at $9 a month for 10,000 credits, while Zapier bills per task.
Which has the most integrations?
Zapier, with more than 8,000 apps. n8n and Make can reach other apps through HTTP requests.
Can I switch tools later?
Yes, but workflows must be rebuilt by hand. Document your automations to make migration easier.
Do all three support AI agents?
Yes. Each now offers AI steps and agents, with n8n giving the most technical control.
