AI voice agents for business: how they work and what they cost
An AI voice agent is software that holds a spoken phone or web conversation: it turns speech into text, uses an AI model to decide what to say or do, and replies with a synthetic voice, often while looking up or updating records. Managed platforms typically cost about $0.08 to $0.15 per minute all-in in 2026, rising with premium models and voices. They suit high-volume, well-defined calls such as bookings, order status and first-line triage.
What is an AI voice agent?
Older phone systems made callers press numbers or say single words. AI voice agents understand natural speech, ask follow-up questions and take actions such as booking an appointment or checking an order. They can answer inbound calls, make outbound calls such as reminders, and run on websites and apps as well as phone lines. They are one type of AI agent, applied to spoken conversation.
How does a voice agent work?
- Telephony: The call arrives through a phone provider or web connection.
- Speech-to-text: The caller’s words are transcribed in real time.
- AI model: A language model decides what the caller wants and what to do next.
- Tools: The agent checks calendars, orders or records through integrations.
- Text-to-speech: The reply is spoken in a natural synthetic voice.
- Handover and logging: Complex calls transfer to a person; every call is summarised and logged.
Speed matters. Pauses of more than a second feel unnatural, so platforms tune each step for low latency, and a well-tuned stack aims for well under a second per turn.
How much do AI voice agents cost?
Pricing is per minute, but headline numbers are not comparable because platforms include different parts of the pipeline. Some charge a platform fee and pass model, voice and phone costs through on top; others bundle most components into one rate.
As of October 2026, analysis by Beri put a managed voice agent at about $0.08 to $0.14 per minute once transcription, the model, the voice and telephony are added, and Aliteq’s breakdown shows how each component adds up. Budget too for build and integration work, testing and ongoing monitoring, which often cost more than the minutes themselves.
Which platforms are commonly used?
- Vapi: Developer-focused orchestration; you choose each component and pay a hosting fee plus provider costs.
- Retell AI: Itemised per-minute pricing with components metered by the platform.
- ElevenLabs Agents: Known for natural voices; plans include minutes with overage pricing.
- Bland: Bundled per-minute pricing aimed at phone automation.
- Open-source frameworks: LiveKit and Pipecat for teams that want to host and control the stack.
Where do voice agents work well?
- Appointment booking and rescheduling for clinics, salons and services
- Order and delivery status for retailers
- First-line triage and routing to the right team
- After-hours answering and message taking
- Outbound reminders and confirmations
- Simple account questions, such as balances or opening hours
They work less well for emotionally charged calls, complex complaints, sales negotiations and anything needing careful judgement. Keep those with people.
What about Arabic, Hindi and other languages?
Many platforms support multiple languages and accents, but quality varies, especially for regional dialects and switching between languages mid-sentence, which is common in the UAE and India. Test with real callers in each language before launch and give callers an easy route to a person if the agent struggles.
What are the risks and rules?
- Disclosure: tell callers they are speaking to an AI; some laws require it, including transparency duties under the EU AI Act
- Consent and recording: follow local rules for recording and storing calls
- Data protection: transcripts can contain personal and payment data
- Hallucination: the agent may state wrong information confidently
- Customer frustration: no route to a human damages trust quickly
Our guide to the EU AI Act for businesses covers the transparency obligations that apply from August 2026.
How do you measure a voice agent’s performance?
- Resolution rate: share of calls completed without a person
- Handover rate and reasons, to find gaps in the agent’s knowledge
- Average handling time compared with human agents
- Caller satisfaction from short post-call surveys
- Cost per resolved call, including platform, model and phone costs
Cost per resolved call is the most useful single figure, because a cheap minute is worthless if the call still ends up with a person.
How do you launch a voice agent responsibly?
- Pick one call type: Start with a high-volume, low-risk call, such as appointment booking.
- Write the conversation design: Script goals, required information, edge cases and handover rules.
- Integrate carefully: Give the agent only the system access it needs.
- Test with real scenarios: Include accents, background noise, interruptions and difficult callers.
- Launch with monitoring: Review transcripts daily at first and track resolution, handover and complaint rates.

How UIUX Studio helps
We design voice conversations, build integrations and set up monitoring so voice agents help customers rather than frustrate them. Our Agentic AI & Automation team builds and tunes voice agents, and our workflow guide to n8n, Zapier and Make covers the automation that often sits behind them.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI voice agent cost per minute?
Typically about $0.08 to $0.15 all-in, more with premium models and voices.
Can callers tell they are talking to AI?
Often not immediately, which is why clear disclosure is important and sometimes legally required.
Can a voice agent transfer to a human?
Yes. Good set-ups transfer with a summary so the caller does not repeat themselves.
Do voice agents work in Arabic or Hindi?
Many platforms support them, but test dialects and code-switching carefully.
Will voice agents replace call centres?
They take over routine calls, while people handle complex and sensitive conversations.
