How to track AI referral traffic in GA4
To track AI referral traffic in GA4, check the AI Assistant default channel Google added in May 2026, then create a custom channel group with a rule that matches AI sources by regex, such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com, placed above Referral. Some AI visits arrive without a referrer and appear as Direct, so treat the numbers as a minimum.
Why track AI referral traffic separately?
When someone clicks a link inside an AI answer, GA4 records the visit. By default, those visits are mixed into Referral, Direct or Organic Search, so you cannot see how much traffic AI assistants send, which pages they cite or whether those visitors convert. Separating them shows whether your GEO work is paying off.
Does GA4 track AI traffic automatically now?
Partly. Google added an AI Assistant default channel to GA4 in May 2026, which groups visits from recognised assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Reports from analysts, including DarwinApps, note that it does not recognise every source, with Perplexity a common gap, and it is not applied retroactively. A custom channel group fills those gaps.
Which referrer domains should you match?
| Assistant | Referrer domain | Notes |
|---|
| ChatGPT | chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com | Mobile apps may not pass a referrer |
| Perplexity | perplexity.ai | Usually passes a referrer |
| Gemini | gemini.google.com | Separate from Google Search traffic |
| Claude | claude.ai | Links out less often |
| Copilot | copilot.microsoft.com | Some sessions show Bing domains |
If your property shows an “AI Assistant” row in Traffic acquisition, start there to see the visits Google already recognises. Then build the custom channel below so nothing slips into Referral or Direct unnoticed.
How do you set up a custom AI channel?
- Open channel groups: In GA4 go to Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups.
- Copy the default group: Create a new group based on the default so your other channels stay the same.
- Add an AI channel: Name it “AI assistants” and set the condition to Source matches regex.
- Paste the regex: Use a pattern covering the domains above.
- Move it above Referral: Channels are evaluated in order, so AI must be checked before Referral.
- Save and validate: Check Realtime while clicking a link from an AI answer, then review Traffic acquisition.
A starting regex: (chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|claude\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com). Review your Referral sources monthly and add new AI domains as they appear.
How do you see which pages AI sends people to?
The landing pages that receive AI traffic are the pages assistants are citing. Compare them with your priority questions to see which answers are working.
What will GA4 miss?
Because many AI interactions end without a click, pair GA4 with monthly prompt checks and branded search trends. Google’s AI features are reported inside Search Console’s web data rather than separately, as explained in our guide to ranking in AI Overviews.
For mentions without clicks, pair GA4 with one of the AI visibility tracking tools.
How should you read the numbers?
AI referral traffic is usually a small share of total visits, but it often arrives with high intent: the visitor has already asked a question, read an answer and chosen to click your link. Look beyond session counts. Compare engagement rate, pages per session and conversions against organic search. If AI visitors convert well but arrive in small numbers, that is a signal to invest in being cited more often. If they bounce, check whether the landing page actually delivers what the AI answer promised.
Watch the trend over several months rather than reacting to a single week, because assistant behaviour and link formats change often. Note any product changes, such as an assistant starting to show more links, alongside your data so you can explain sudden jumps.
How do you connect AI traffic to leads?
- Capture the session source in a hidden form field so it reaches your CRM
- Mark key events, such as form submissions and demo requests, in GA4
- Compare conversion rates for AI traffic against organic search
- Ask “How did you hear about us?” with an AI assistant option
What should a monthly AI traffic report include?
- AI sessions by source, with month-on-month change
- Top landing pages from AI assistants
- Engagement rate and key events for AI traffic compared with other channels
- Notes from manual prompt checks: where you were cited or missing

Frequently asked questions
Does GA4 show ChatGPT traffic?
Yes, when a click passes a referrer. Since May 2026 GA4 also has a native AI Assistant channel.
Why is Perplexity traffic in Referral?
The native channel may not recognise it; add perplexity.ai to a custom AI channel.
Are channel groups retroactive?
Custom channel groups apply to reporting going forward in many cases; explorations with filters work on historical data.
Why do I see AI visits as Direct?
Some apps do not pass a referrer, so GA4 cannot attribute the visit.
Can GA4 show AI Overview clicks?
No. They are counted with Google organic search traffic.
